(More customer reviews)It's a remarkable little toy, one which is not only fun to play with, but just fun to marvel at how the designers managed to duplicate the real-life mechanisms in a level-action rifle and the box magazine. This is not "pump action" as the forestock does not move; all the compressive force required to launch the dart comes from the lever action (forward pull compresses the spring). The designers faced a compromise, more power would have required a harder pull, which might make it difficult for kids less than 8-9. An easier pull would limit its range, which is decent but not outstanding. As it is, the action requires sufficient force that the designers wisely made the lever out of metal, not plastic. Loading the cartridges one by one against the spring tension into the box magazine, sliding it into the receiver, cycling the action and having the empty shell forcefully eject, followed by the smooth loading of the new cartridge, is all quite satisfying. In a pinch you can be shooting like John Wayne in Rio Bravo.
It rivals the 6-shot maverick for fun-factor (they also use the same type of darts), and the only caveat I can offer is that smaller kids younger than 8 or 9 might find the lever action hard.
